The majority of the victims were aged in their mid teens at the time, according to court documents.
The charges include sexual violation, which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.
The man was given interim name suppression by a Community Magistrate when he first appeared in court in 2018.
According to court documents, he has concerns for his personal safety.
As well as the sex charges, the man is accused of giving some of the boys drugs.
One of the boys is said to have been given the class A drug methamphetamine and others were said to have been given cannabis.
The man is also accused of assaulting one of the boys with a bamboo stick and threatening to kill two others.
He has been remanded in prison and is due back in court next month.
Oranga Tamariki declined to answer questions about vetting processes and whether it was involved in the investigation.
